Whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst
17 APRIL (Jn 6,35-40)
Jesus announced himself to the Jews as the true bread and true water; a bread that satiates and water that quenches the thirst, “I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” He knows the hearts of those who are listening to him that is why he adds: “But I said that you have seen me and yet do not believe.” Jesus knows what there is in every man. This truth is also affirmed with utmost clarity in the Gospel: “While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well.” (John 2:23-25). On the inner and outer, visible and invisible knowledge of people and things, one can applied to Jesus in full what the Psalm affirms of God:
O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down, And are intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, You know it all. You have enclosed me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is too high, I cannot attain to it. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me. If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,” Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You. For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You. Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way. (Cf. Psalm 139 (138) 1-24).
It is as if Jesus for a moment had forgotten the discourse on the bread of life and addresses the Jews to reveal them the unique relationship that exists between Him and the Father. Being of Jesus is a gift of the Father. Yesterday, the Father has given you, the Jews, to Moses. Now he wants to give you to me. “If you let yourself be given to me, I will not cast you out, for I have come down from heaven not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.” You, Jews must not change your faith. You have to give truth and development to your faith. Rather, you have to give it continuity. You are a gift of God. You must always remain a gift of God. What does God want to do of you? A gift to me. If you remain in your faith, you will enter into the circuit of real life. On the contrary, if you oppose God, and do not let yourselves be made a gift, you remain in your death. I am the life of God for you.
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. But I told you that although you have seen (me), you do not believe. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it (on) the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him (on) the last day.”
God has a great plan of life for us. He wants to make this project happen through me. However, this project cannot be realized without your faith in me. You see me, believe in me and you will have eternal life. I will raise you in the last day. Jesus’ discourse is highly theological. First, the Father gave the Jews to Moses, then to Joshua, after to David, to the prophets and to every one of his messengers and sent. The Father has now sent Jesus. He now wants to give the Jews to Jesus. The action is all of the Father. It is He who from eternity guides and directs the whole history of salvation. They must not change God. they must continue to live in the logic and truth of their faith.
Virgin Mary, Mother of the Redemption, Angels and Saints, teach us the logic of the faith.
