This generation is an evil generation
When this happens it is the end of faith and religion is corrupted instantly. Without the purity of revealed truth contained in the Word of the Lord, every relationship with God and with men, is out of phase, because it lacks the divine light that necessarily must illuminate everything. The sign is not the truth of the faith. It is used to lead to the truth. However, since who has to read the sign is the mind of man, it might be given any content, of light and darkness, of good and evil, of justice and injustice, of holiness or sin. A corrupt mind corrupts everything. A mind of light illuminates everuthing of the holy and honest truth.
For the mind to be able to grasp the divine light in the signs of God it is necessary that it is without sin, that it dwells in the Word, that it loves its God and that it respects his every action in history. However, if the generation is evil, just as Jesus is testifying of it – and his attesting is more than true because it is made in the Holy Spirit – from a perverse, wicked and evil heart, immersed in sin what light might ever come out? None. Any holy sign given by Jesus the Lord would be interpreted in accordance with falsehood, never according to pure divine truth.
This is attested by the fact that Jesus cast out a dumb devil, an unclean spirit and the Pharisees accused him of being an ally of Beelzebub. The greatest sign of God’s presence in Lord Jesus has been interpreted as an unmistakable sign of the presence and closeness of Jesus with the prince of darkness. A wicked mind knows how to do these things. A heart soaked in sin goes as far as this. Jesus cannot give a sign to this generation. Any sign he gave them, even the most striking, would be distorted by the wicked mind. Much prudence, wisdom and infinite shrewdness are needed in a pastoral. Before responding to men, you should always consult the Spirit of God.
While still more people gathered in the crowd, he said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.
Jesus gives them his Word as a sign. This is enough to attest to his origin from the Father. Doing so he inserts himself fully in the biblical tradition. Jonah gave no sign to the people of Nineveh. He only said one sentence: “Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown.” The sinful city was converted to these few words. Not even Solomon made signs with the Queen of the South. He only showed her a little of his wisdom. That person was stunned by such a vast mind that Solomon enjoyed. Jonah said a word of God. Christ is the eternal Word of God. Solomon was wise, even if beyond measure. Jesus is the eternal, together, divine and human wisdom. What is the answer of his generation before this uniqueness of the Lord Jesus? The perfect disbelief. Worse. they went to him, they took the miracle and they left the truth of conversion and salvation. they took advantage of the miraculous power of the Lord Jesus, but they did not taste the fruits of its truth. They took the ephemeral and refused the eternal. They thought of the body and forgot about the soul.
Virgin Mary, Mother of the Redemption, Angels and Saints give us true faith in the Word.
