There was a man there whose right hand was withered

10 SEPTEMBER (Lk 6,6-11)

God entrusted himself, his word, his every gift of grace and truth to the holy intelligence of man. He can know good and evil, provided that sin does not eclipse his knowledge and evil does not obscure his wisdom.
Hearken to me, my son, take my advice, apply your mind to my words, While I propose measured wisdom, and impart accurate knowledge. When at the first God created his works and, as he made them, assigned their tasks, He ordered for all time what they were to do and their domains from generation to generation. They were not to hunger, nor grow weary, nor ever cease from their tasks. Not one should ever crowd its neighbor, nor should they ever disobey his word. Then the Lord looked upon the earth, and filled it with his blessings. Its surface he covered with all manner of life which must return into it again. The Lord from the earth created man, and in his own image he made him. Limited days of life he gives him and makes him return to earth again. He endows man with a strength of his own, and with power over all things else on earth. He puts the fear of him in all flesh, and gives him rule over beasts and birds. He forms men’s tongues and eyes and ears, and imparts to them an understanding heart. With wisdom and knowledge he fills them; good and evil he shows them. He looks with favor upon their hearts, and shows them his glorious works, That they may describe the wonders of his deeds and praise his holy name. He has set before them knowledge, a law of life as their inheritance; An everlasting covenant he has made with them, his commandments he has revealed to them. His majestic glory their eyes beheld, his glorious voice their ears heard. He says to them, “Avoid all evil”; each of them he gives precepts about his fellow men. (Sir 116,24-17,14).
Jesus, very full light of truth, most holy grace of love and charity, is immersed in a world of sin; as a consequence, he finds himself living in the midst of men devoid of all intelligence, knowledge, true wisdom, incapable of discerning what is right , attached to a law interpreted by a heart that is as dull as fat.

While he was going through a field of grain on a Sabbath, his disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. Some Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Have you not read what David did when he and those (who were) with him were hungry? (How) he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering, which only the priests could lawfully eat, ate of it, and shared it with his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the Sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him. But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up and stand before us.” And he rose and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” Looking around at them all, he then said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so and his hand was restored. But they became enraged and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.

Never might the Law of the Lord be against man. It is for his greatest good. Rather, it is the true Law of the true good. All other laws indicate a good that not always is the true good of man. Never might any mediator of the Law stop at its letter. He must always read and interpret it with the Spirit of the Lord that dwells in him. Sin extinguishes the Spirit of God and the mediator lacks the true Hermeneutic, the true Exegete, the true Interpreter that can tell him all the time the will of God contained in the writings of the Law. Not only does a sinner not know how to read according to the Law of God, he is opposed to any true reading and in order to succeed in his evil purpose he allies with other sinners seeking to harm the one who showed him the truth of every Word of God. This is the great sadness produced by sin: one does not want the true good for himself, and he wants to overshadow it for the others.
