There is need of only one thing
7 OCTOBER (Lk 10,38-42)
The true wisdom of men is that of conquering empires that eventually fade away. It is not even the one of submerging in the things of this worlduntil becoming slaves to them. Today there is an idolatry so intrusive that the man himself has been reduced to a thing. He was deprived of hiseternal dimension. He is pure flesh, only flesh, time, only time, a thing, only a thing. Mankind has always been attracted by the lust of the eyes andof the flesh, always won by the pride of life, but never in such a strong, tough, sneaky and petty way. Never had it fallen so low. What St. Paulsays in his Letter to the Romans appears a nothing before idolatry, impiety and the wreckage humanity is falling in.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: for Jew first, and then Greek. For in it is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith; as it is written, “The one who is righteous by faith will live.” The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness. For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God made it evident to them. Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made. As a result, they have no excuse; for although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened. While claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for the likeness of an image of mortal man or of birds or of four-legged animals or of snakes.
Therefore, God handed them over to impurity through the lusts of their hearts for the mutual degradation of their bodies. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions. Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is improper. They are filled with every form of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, rivalry, treachery, and spite. They are gossips and scandalmongers and they hate God. They are insolent, haughty, boastful, ingenious in their wickedness, and rebellious toward their parents. They are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know the just decree of God that all who practice such things deserve death, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them (Rm 1,16-32).
Today we are witnessing the loss of any real transcendence. The sinful immanence is devouring us more than incandescent ash and lapillierupted by a strong volcanic explosion. It is as if the man had lost his soul, spirit and eternity. It is as if everything were enclosed in the momentexistence is consumed in. We no longer even of a human future. Everything is terribly materializing. Even life is getting transformed into matter. This is a true spiritual devastation.
As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary (who) sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”
A man has need of only one thing: finding his soul, his spirit and his eternity. He needs to connect in a stable way to his true transcendence from which he came and which he walks to. Only one can offer this transcendence: Jesus Christ. He gives it through His one, holy, catholic andapostolic Church. If his Church gives matter and not spirit, things and not truth, bread and not Eucharist, man remains in his death forever. God is the only life of the soul.
Virgin Mary, Mother of the Redemption, Angels and Saints give us our God and Lord.
