The Mighty One has done great things for me

31 MAY (Lk 1,39-56)

The Old Testament is the narration of the great things the Lord has done for his people. It is also the narration of the wonderful work of God which is the creation. The entire universe is a song to our God. It is a wonderful and holy confession of glory.

Shout joyfully to God, all the earth;Sing the glory of His name; Make His praise glorious.Say to God, “How awesome are Your works! Because of the greatness of Your power Your enemies will give feigned obedience to You.“All the earth will worship You, And will sing praises to You; They will sing praises to Your name.” Come and see the works of God, Who is awesome in His deeds toward the sons of men.He turned the sea into dry land; They passed through the river on foot; There let us rejoice in Him!He rules by His might forever; His eyes keep watch on the nations; Let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Bless our God, O peoples, And sound His praise abroad,Who keeps us in life And does not allow our feet to slip. For You have tried us, O God; You have refined us as silver is refined. You brought us into the net; You laid an oppressive burden upon our loins. You made men ride over our heads; We went through fire and through water, Yet You brought us out into a place of abundance.I shall come into Your house with burnt offerings; I shall pay You my vows,Which my lips uttered And my mouth spoke when I was in distress.I shall offer to You burnt offerings of fat beasts, With the smoke of rams; I shall make an offering of bulls with male goats.Come and hear, all who fear God, And I will tell of what He has done for my soul.I cried to Him with my mouth, And He was extolled with my tongue. If I regard wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear; But certainly God has heard; He has given heed to the voice of my prayer.Blessed be God, Who has not turned away my prayer Nor His loving kindness from me (Psalm 55 (65) 1-20).

What the Lord has done through Mary infinitely surpasses every other work of God. Mary is in herself absolutely the greatest work of God. God could create a thousand other heavens and a thousand other universes. His omnipotence allows it him. However, he cannot create another Mother of God, because he cannot generate another Son. As the eternal Son is one, so the earthly Mother of his Son is one, because the Incarnation is one. Mary is the singularity, uniqueness, unrepeatable work of God. Mary is the greatest work of God’s mercy. This truth is only of Mary. Without the New Testament, the Old narrates only a faint idea of God. The Old is not even the light as compared to the sun.

During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him. He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy, according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.” Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.

Mary is fully filled with God. She is the true dwelling place of God on our earth. She goes to the house of her cousin Elizabeth and like an amphora filled with precious ointment pour out the Holy Spirit in full, she pours him into the heart of Elizabeth. John is filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth sees the mystery of Mary and sings it. This is visit that the Christian must pay to the world. He must transfer to it all the fragrance of the Holy Spirit he is full of. This is the true evangelization: the transfer of the Holy Spirit. The Christian goes into the world full of the Spirit of the Lord, pours it in full in the hearts and they change nature. They see God in the decanters and shout and sing their truth. Not because they explain it to him, but because they see it in the Spirit poured into them.

Virgin Mary, Mother of the Redemption, Angels and Saints make us decanters of the Spirit.
