Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear
24 JULY (Mt 13,10-17)
Man is blind and he walks as a blind man in history. He cannot even see the great signs of the power and omnipotence of God, how can we hope to think that he can see God in a man? The ancient Scripture calls this man blind “foolish by nature,” that is a corrupt person. In fact, he has lost the use of his eyes, tongue, hearing and of the very mind. He lacks in the science of argumentation and deduction.
For all men were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God, and who from the good things seen did not succeed in knowing him who is, and from studying the works did not discern the artisan; But either fire, or wind, or the swift air, or the circuit of the stars, or the mighty water, or the luminaries of heaven, the governors of the world, they considered gods. Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods, let them know how far more excellent is the Lord than these; for the original source of beauty fashioned them. Or if they were struck by their might and energy, let them from these things realize how much more powerful is he who made them. For from the greatness and the beauty of created things their original author, by analogy, is seen. But yet, for these the blame is less; For they indeed have gone astray perhaps, though they seek God and wish to find him. For they search busily among his works, but are distracted by what they see, because the things seen are fair. But again, not even these are pardonable. For if they so far succeeded in knowledge that they could speculate about the world, how did they not more quickly find its Lord? (Wis 13.1-9).
The greatness of a man is that of knowing how to see God in every place where He were to manifest himself. The one who is pure at heart, righteous and not contaminated possesses this vision. In fact, the pure at heart always see God. They see him because their intimate is crystal clear and God lets himself be seen. Jesus came to our earth . He is the eternal Word of the Father, His only Son. He is the true God in the flesh. His flesh is all transparent more than glass or very fine crystal. If we see a coloured liquid in a glass, why cannot we see God in the flesh of the Word of God? We do not see him because we are blind. We do not hear him because we are deaf. We do not perceive him because we have no touch. We do not feel his odour of sanctity because we have lost all touch. We do not talk about him because we ignore his very existence. This is our spiritual condition.
The disciples approached him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” He said to them in reply, “Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted. To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because ‘they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.’ Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: ‘You shall indeed hear but not understand you shall indeed look but never see. Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and be converted, and I heal them.’ “But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
Jesus declares his disciples blessed because they see and listen to the Word of life. They see and hear God that speaks and acts through his flesh. They are called blessed, even if they currently do not understand. Then, the Holy Spirit will come and remind them of everything. He will introduce them into the fullness of the truth of the mystery of Jesus the Lord. A great light will be made for them and only then the blessedness of Jesus will be fulfilled for them. They currently see as through a very opaque glass. They glimpse something. Now, they are like the blind man who touched by Jesus sees men, because he sees like trees that walk. Tomorrow, touched by the Holy Spirit, they will see Jesus in the completeness of his mystery and his life. Bliss will be full.
