Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?

2 JULY (Mt 8,23-27)

The Gospel is the progressive and steady revelation of the truth of Jesus. Any event that takes place and is completed, attests that Jesus has the same omnipotence of God, without any difference. It is enough to have a look at the Old Testament to convince us that it is so. God is the one who possesses the absolute government on all his creation. Even the winds and the sea obey to his every command. It is the faith of Israel.
Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting. Who can speak of the mighty deeds of the LORD, Or can show forth all His praise? How blessed are those who keep justice, Who practice righteousness at all times! Remember me, O LORD, in Your favor toward Your people; Visit me with Your salvation, That I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones, That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, That I may glory with Your inheritance. We have sinned like our fathers, We have committed iniquity, we have behaved wickedly. Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; They did not remember Your abundant kindnesses, But rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea. Nevertheless He saved them for the sake of His name, That He might make His power known. Thus He rebuked the Red Sea and it dried up, And He led them through the deeps, as through the wilderness. So He saved them from the hand of the one who hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. The waters covered their adversaries; Not one of them was left. Then they believed His words; They sang His praise (Psalm 106 (105) 1-12).

Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep. For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea. They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery. They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits’ end. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving kindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders. He changes rivers into a wilderness And springs of water into a thirsty ground; A fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it. He changes a wilderness into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water; And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an inhabited city (Psalm 107 (106), 23-36).

Who is Jesus? He is the one who exerts on creation the same omnipotence of God What was done before by God, now it is done by Jesus. However, not by command of God, as it was the case with Moses, Joshua or other mediators of his omnipotent word. Jesus works all this in his own name, with his authority, his Word and his command.

He got into a boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep. They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm. The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?”

Whatever happens in the life of Jesus, is needed for this: manifesting the truth of his person, which is of divine origin, even if hidden in his mortal flesh. This is the difference between Christ and Moses and others. The others are of human nature and act in God’s name. Jesus is of a divine nature and person and acts from himself.

The truth of Jesus is not evidence by theological, metaphysical and mystical studies or of other nature. The truth of Jesus is his history that falls under the eyes of all. Everybody sees and everyone is forced to ask himself: “Who is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”. Who is this that has full government over all creation? The answer can only be one: This is God. He is God in everything as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is. There is no difference. Everything that Jesus wants, he does it. Nothing is impossible for him, nothing too big for Him. Let us say it again: this truth is not of a theological or metaphysical and reason order. It is a historical, visible, audible and palpable truth.
