Why did you doubt?
5 AUGUST (Mt 14,22-36)
Jesus is a singular, special and unique Master. He does not teach the truth about his person. He does not reveal with words his divine and human truth. He shows it. He shows it in his every act. Every event that the Evangelists report us of his life, is a revelation, a manifestation and announcement of his truth.
Jesus is the man of the uninterrupted prayer. In Him, it is not a request of miracles, signs and wonders. Instead, it is a request of perfect communion between his and the Father’s will. Being he the sent, mediator, apostle of the Father, nothing might and must he do on his own initiative. Nothing that comes from his heart, his mind and his desires. Nothing that is requested on the part of a man. It is never the will of man to move the will of Jesus. It must always be the will of the Father to reveal him what, how, when and where to operate. Jesus cannot but be from the Father.
He is from the Father by eternal generation. He is from the Father in his incarnation. He must be from the Father for all the days of his life on our earth. He will also be from the Father in eternity. This is his truth: being always from the Father. This is also the truth on man: being from the Father. He is from the Father, if he is from Jesus Christ, who is the only, universal Mediator of his grace and truth. Who is not from Christ, never might he be from the Father. He is from Christ, who is from his one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. It is in this Church that there is the whole truth of Jesus Christ and the fullness of his grace.
This is the great responsibility of every minister of Christ: being always from Him, in the same way that He is from the Father. If the minister of Christ is dissociated from his Mediator, instantly he becomes useless to the world and to history. For this reason he must also immerse himself in prayer and ask Jesus for the grace to be always from his will. Every other grace has already been given by Christ the Lord. It is inherent in his ministry. On the contrary, the grace of being from his will is always to be asked, always to be invoked and always to be renewed.
Then he made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once (Jesus) spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret. When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed.
Peter is afraid of being from the will of Jesus. He starts, then he gets scared, because of the strong wind, and begins to sink. But he was called to walk on water the same way as his Master. The Master walks because he is from the will of the Father; he hears his voice, does not fear the fury of the wind. He knows that his Father makes him harmless. Not being from the will of the Master, Peter sinks into the agitated waters of the sea. However, he cries a prayer of salvation, and the Lord draws him out.
When the disciple is from the will of Jesus Christ, there are no damaging winds for him. Even if they blow strong, in tempest, they are devoid of any force to cause harm. In fact, as soon as Jesus sets foot on the boat, the wind ceases. The sea becomes calm. Everything is cleared. The wind comes to prove the truth of our being: whether we are or less from the will Christ Jesus. We must only be interested in and look after this.
Virgin Mary, Mother of the Redemption, Angels and Saints make us from the will of Jesus.
