New wine must be poured into fresh wineskins
7 SEPTEMBER (Lk 5,33-39)
Faith is surrender, true exodus, genuine liberation from the old way of thinking about God to a new way, that every day should be tuned on the divine will. It is leaving the metal, stone, wooden, and thought idols to embrace the most pure and holy revelation that today the Lord makes our ears hear. Even the religion of yesterday could be an idol for us, if it becomes closure, obstacle for the voice of the Lord to be heard, today. Basically this is the theme of the Epistle to the Hebrews, an urgent invitation to listen to the voice of God speaks to us today through his beloved son.
Therefore, as the holy Spirit says: “Oh, that today you would hear his voice, ‘Harden not your hearts as at the rebellion in the day of testing in the desert, where your ancestors tested and tried me and saw my works for forty years. Because of this I was provoked with that generation and I said, “They have always been of erring heart, and they do not know my ways.” As I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter into my rest.”‘” Take care, brothers, that none of you may have an evil and unfaithful heart, so as to forsake the living God. Encourage yourselves daily while it is still “today,” so that none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin. We have become partners of Christ if only we hold the beginning of the reality firm until the end, for it is said: “Oh, that today you would hear his voice: ‘Harden not your hearts as at the rebellion.'” Who were those who rebelled when they heard? Was it not all those who came out of Egypt under Moses? With whom was he “provoked for forty years”? Was it not those who had sinned, whose corpses fell in the desert? And to whom did he “swear that they should not enter into his rest,” if not to those who were disobedient? And we see that they could not enter for lack of faith. Therefore, let us be on our guard while the promise of entering into his rest remains, that none of you seem to have failed. For in fact we have received the good news just as they did. But the word that they heard did not profit them, for they were not united in faith with those who listened. For we who believed enter into (that) rest, just as he has said: (Heb 3,7-4,2).
With Jesus Christ every religion lived so far must be abandoned: faith is the transition from the voice of Moses to the new voice that God is making them hear.
That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “What I told you from the beginning. I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world.” They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father. So Jesus said (to them), “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me. The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.” (Jn 8,21-29).
Scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’ time do everything for Jesus to get tired and stop being the missionary of the new voice of God. For them only one is the voice of God: the one of Moses. They do not want to know other voices. For them they must never exist.
And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but yours eat and drink.” Jesus answered them, “Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” And he also told them a parable. “No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one. Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not match the old cloak. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined. Rather, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins. (And) no one who has been drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.'”
The truth that Jesus announces us is always to be understood, grasped, known: either you decant all the old voices of God into the one, eternal, immortal voice which is mine, or never might your religion produce true salvation. Always the voice of yesterday must be poured into all the truth that today the Holy Spirit of God gives us.
